Building Your Own Label with Brand New Records

Speakers: John Markey [Artist - Saol Nua] & Lauren Andrew [Artist - La La]

Join Lauren and John from Brand New Records as they discuss its history, evolution and current operation within the world of electronic dance music. They'll discuss how they select artists to work with, A&R decisions regarding music, the ethos of the label, and how they navigate the often crowded field of independent record labels. There'll be time for a question and answer session for those who'd like to know more about establishing your own label and the benefits it can bring to artists and those who work in the industry alike.

Lauren Andrew (La La)

Lauren Andrew aka La La is a producer, DJ and record label owner from Glasgow. When she isn’t touring the world across clubs and festivals like Warehouse Project, Printworks, Fabric, Glastonbury, Circo Loco and Sub Club, she has also found the time to release her debut mixtape ‘give yourself a try’ on her own imprint, Brand New Records in July of this year. Lauren established Brand New Records in 2020 as a means to support artists based in Scotland, since then the label has released several records achieving significant radio and streaming support across some of the world’s most recognisable platforms. This past year has seen a MixMag live stream reach almost 400,000 views, and Lauren taking over BBC Radio 1’s residency, with four curated shows hosted across September 2023 to an international audience.

John Markey (Saol Nua)

Dr. John Markey is a DJ, producer, lecturer and label manager for Brand New Records. Having operated in the music industries for most of his life, he also spent time studying music at the University of Glasgow where he was awarded a PhD in the subject in 2019. John has presented at Resonate in the past covering topics such as copyright and live music streaming. Producing under the name Saol Nua, he has released several records on Brand New, achieving significant radio support across multiple stations. He began working as label manager for Brand New in January 2023, and will bring his experience in helping to operate a successful independent label to the table.
